Having fun with FreeBSD

OK, so you load FreeBSD and you tinker around with the old style startx, and it just looked so static, so dead. I put FreeSBIE (basically the same thing with some cool window dressing) on my VGNT350P and downloaded the patch set my root password etc. had some problems with their adduser feature so I used sysinstall to give me a nonroot CLI style acount.

Anybody thinking of installing FreeBSD remember when your creating your user account to put wheel, operator in the box that says member groups. and when you want to turn your computer off, type shutdown -h now at the command line. You cant imagine how much time I spent the first time I installed BSD on my old PIImmx. I didn't have this nice book then iether, and I couldn't at that time figure out how to get a dialup connection working with it so I was making trips to the library to get answers and I must have punched 300 commands worded differently in the hopes of turning off the computer without crashing it manually.

Well, Im still constantly seeking answers but I am having better days lately, and getting more and more used to CLI (command line interface) as opposed to the GUI but Freesbie just looked so cool, that I had to have it, and I love XFCE which is listed as the heavy environment but loads in about half the time of both gnome or kde.

I just figured out that FreeBSD calls eth0; wi0 . And you use ifconfig instead of iwconfig even for your wireless. But that might be because I need wireless tools. Ive got some reading and tinkering to do.

my issues
sound is not working, even after the patch and making sure the mute was off... etc...
doesn't pick up integrated wireless - but probably just need a driver (picks up my prism card fine).
doesn't pick up the bluetooth--probably a driver issue as well
doesn't seem to pick up flash or usb headset.

fixed
the realestate issue was solved by going into the BIOS, very easy, although I selected to remove the sony splash and it didn't obey--I did get the use of the full wide screen back. It does distort some pictures abnormally when set as wallpaper even if you center it.
my work around for the flash device was to just run knoppix and view my files that way.
(I tried to create a persistant knoppix image but it breaks my system so I gave up. home=scan equals a monitor that doesn't monitor.)
Like I said, my work around for the wi0 was to run my prismII pci card and turn off the integrated wifi.
